What does the CORE do to help Canadian companies respect human rights?

We post information about human rights on our website including the following:

• research and analysis on how human rights abuse affects different sectors, regions, and communities
• information on the steps that companies can take to respect human rights
• reports about the human rights abuses we investigate

We look into complaints of possible human rights abuse by Canadian companies. We may even look into possible human rights abuses without a complaint.

If we decide that a Canadian company abused any human rights, then we will recommend ways for the company, the Canadian government, and others to fix the harm. We do this in several ways:

• We report publicly on what we find. We follow up to see if the harm has been fixed.
• We may recommend that the Canadian companytake any of these actions:
  • pay to compensate people who are harmed by a human rights abuse
  • apologize publicly for NOT respecting the human rights of the people who have been harmed
  • do what is needed to fix the harm including paying wages, giving back land, and cleaning up pollution
  • make changes so that the same harm or similar harm does NOT happen again
• We may recommend that the Canadian governmenttake these actions:
  • stop trade support to the Canadian company
  • refuse to give trade or financial support to the company in the future
  • send the complaint to another organization or to the police
  • change Canadian laws and policies

We are NOT a court. We do NOT have the power to make people or companies take specific actions.
